Inspired by brush lettering, Gabriello Bold was designed by Paul Barnes for Puma's sponsored teams in two major international football tournaments in 2010: the Africa Cup of Nations and the World Cup. We saw some potential for the face beyond usage in sports, so Miguel Reyes drew four additional weights.
Gabriello is a new addition to a much-maligned genre of soft, casual, brush-inspired sans serifs than includes Dom Casual, Balloon and Hobo. These faces have a particular kind of charm, though they are unfashionable because of their ubiquity. Gabriello is casual without being cute, and its mix of round and sharp corners on stroke terminals follows the logic of brush lettering. The angling of the letters on both axes – originally done to bring the energy of a script to the names on football shirts, where production constrants make it impossible for strokes to overlap - give the face a particularly active texture.
